Hotjar
Closed to new signups — Hotjar has been absorbed into Contentsquare.
What it is
Hotjar combined session recordings, heatmaps, funnel analysis, on-site surveys and feedback widgets in a deliberately approachable package, and non-technical teams adopted it without training. Contentsquare bought it in 2021 and completed the merger on 1 July 2025. Contentsquare now states plainly that it is no longer possible to create a Hotjar account: hotjar.com redirects to Contentsquare, existing customers can still log in while they are migrated, and new users sign up for Contentsquare instead, where the old Observe/Ask/Engage split has become Experience Analytics, Voice of Customer and Product Analytics.
Best for
Where it is strong
- Non-technical teams adopt it without training, which is why it spread inside organisations.
- Surveys and recordings together let you ask a user about the behaviour you just watched.
- Simple installation and good default privacy masking.
Where it falls short
- You cannot buy it: new accounts are closed and you are really evaluating Contentsquare.
- Existing customers face a migration onto separately billed product lines, which can change the total.
- Weak for engineering debugging compared to LogRocket or FullStory.

What drives the bill: Hotjar's own plans are no longer sold. New buyers are quoted on Contentsquare's three product lines, which are billed separately, so budget for the line you need rather than one Hotjar-style bill. Existing customers are being migrated through 2026.
