Testcontainers
Real databases and services in throwaway Docker containers, per test run.
What it is
Testcontainers starts real dependencies — Postgres, Kafka, Redis, Elasticsearch, even a browser — as Docker containers for the lifetime of a test, then destroys them. That replaces in-memory fakes with the actual software you run in production, eliminating the class of bugs that only appear against the real engine.
Best for
Where it is strong
- Tests run against the real database engine, so dialect and behaviour differences surface early.
- Containers are disposable, which removes shared-state flakiness entirely.
- Excellent language coverage with idiomatic APIs.
Where it falls short
- Requires a Docker daemon in CI, which not every environment provides.
- Container startup adds seconds to each test run unless reused carefully.
- Heavier resource usage than in-memory alternatives.
