Puppeteer
Chrome automation library from the Chrome team. Great for scraping, thin for testing.
What it is
Puppeteer is Google's Node.js library for driving Chrome and Firefox over the DevTools protocol. It is the direct ancestor of Playwright and shares much of its shape, but it is a browser-automation library rather than a test framework — there is no runner, no assertions and no reporting. It remains a strong choice for scraping, PDF generation and screenshot pipelines.
Best for
Where it is strong
- Small, fast, and very well documented for Chrome-specific work.
- First-class access to the Chrome DevTools protocol for performance tracing and coverage.
- Excellent at non-test jobs: PDF rendering, screenshots, scraping.
Where it falls short
- No test runner, assertions, retries or reporting — you assemble all of it.
- Chrome and Firefox only; no WebKit.
- For E2E testing specifically, Playwright is a strict superset. Choose Puppeteer only when you want a minimal automation library.
