Playwright
Microsoft's cross-browser automation library with tracing and auto-waiting built in.
What it is
Playwright drives Chromium, Firefox and WebKit through a single API, with automatic waiting for elements, network interception and a trace viewer that replays a failed run step by step. It ships its own test runner, parallel workers and browser binaries, so a working suite is roughly one command away. Bindings exist for TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Java and .NET.

Where it is strong
- Auto-waiting and web-first assertions remove most of the sleep() flake that plagues older tools.
- The trace viewer — DOM snapshots, network, console and screenshots per step — is the best failure triage in the category.
- True WebKit support, so Safari bugs are caught on Linux CI without a Mac.
- Free parallelism: shard across as many workers or CI machines as you like at no licence cost.
Where it falls short
- No native mobile app support. Mobile means an emulated viewport, not a real device.
- The API surface is large; teams without a conventions document end up with four ways to write the same locator.
- Component testing is still experimental compared to the E2E runner.
