Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

Strengths
- Fastest and most reliable option on iOS, with no third-party layer to break.
- Native accessibility-hierarchy access and built-in test recording.
- Guaranteed to keep working with each iOS release.
- One API and one test suite for both platforms, in the language you already use.
- Every device cloud supports it, so you stay portable.
- No modification to the app under test — you test the same binary you ship.
Limitations
- iOS and macOS only, and Swift only.
- Requires macOS CI runners, which are expensive to rent or own.
- Element queries are less expressive than modern web locators.
- Notoriously slow and flaky compared to the native frameworks it wraps.
- Setup is a genuine project: drivers, Xcode, provisioning, Android SDK, versions.
- Debugging failures across the Appium/driver/device layers takes real expertise.
Best for
iOS teams that ship native and want first-party reliability.
Teams that must cover iOS and Android from a single suite and can absorb the setup cost.
