XCUITest
Apple's native UI testing framework, built into Xcode.
What it is
XCUITest is Apple's first-party UI automation framework, written in Swift or Objective-C and run through Xcode or xcodebuild. It has direct access to the accessibility hierarchy, records tests interactively, and is the foundation every iOS automation tool — Appium included — ultimately drives.
Best for
Where it is strong
- Fastest and most reliable option on iOS, with no third-party layer to break.
- Native accessibility-hierarchy access and built-in test recording.
- Guaranteed to keep working with each iOS release.
Where it falls short
- iOS and macOS only, and Swift only.
- Requires macOS CI runners, which are expensive to rent or own.
- Element queries are less expressive than modern web locators.
