Selenium Grid vs BrowserStack
Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

PaidWhat drives the bill
The metric that actually scales your invoice.
Free software; you pay for the compute and for someone to keep it running.
Automate plans are priced per parallel session and are the real cost — expect roughly $150-$250 per parallel session per month at small scale.

Strengths
- No per-session licensing — parallelism is limited only by your compute budget.
- Runs inside your network, so private environments and data never leave.
- Fully under your control, including browser versions.
- The broadest device and browser matrix available, including older versions and new devices quickly.
- Works with essentially every automation framework, so migration is low-risk.
- Manual live testing on real devices is excellent for reproducing customer reports.
Limitations
- You own the operations: scaling, browser image updates, flaky node debugging.
- No real iOS or Android devices, and no Safari without macOS hosts.
- No built-in video, analytics or dashboards without extra tooling.
- Parallel-session pricing gets expensive fast, and idle capacity is still billed.
- Remote sessions are slower than local execution, lengthening feedback loops.
- The product surface has sprawled; you will be sold several adjacent modules.
Best for
Organisations with platform engineering capacity and either scale or data-residency constraints.
Teams needing a wide real-device matrix without maintaining a lab.
All of these integrate with: Selenium, Jenkins.
