Crazy Egg vs Microsoft Clarity

Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

What drives the bill

The metric that actually scales your invoice.

Tracked pageviews are the meter, and the entry plan's 5,000 a month is small enough that a modest marketing site outgrows it. Recording and heatmap-report counts are separate caps on the same plan.

Free with no traffic cap. Microsoft uses aggregated data to improve its products, which is the trade you are making.

Free tier

Free trial on every plan; no permanently free tier.

Everything, unlimited, at any traffic level.

Strengths

  • Heatmaps, recordings, surveys and A/B testing in one subscription rather than three.
  • The A/B editor is usable by a marketer without an engineer, which is the whole point of buying it.
  • Twenty years of the same product, which is unusual reassurance in this category.
  • No cost and no sampling at any volume — nothing else in the category comes close on price.
  • Rage-click and dead-click detection surfaces real usability problems immediately.
  • Easy to install and reasonable default masking of sensitive fields.

Limitations

  • Pageview-metered, and pageviews are the thing you least control — a good week of traffic is an overage.
  • Session replay is shallower than FullStory or LogRocket: no console, no network, no error correlation.
  • Web only. There is no mobile SDK.
  • Data goes to Microsoft, which is a real consideration for GDPR-sensitive deployments.
  • Filtering and segmentation are shallower than paid tools.
  • Support is community-based and the roadmap is not yours to influence.

Best for

Marketing teams that want to see behaviour and act on it in one tool, without an engineer in the loop.

Almost anyone starting with session replay, and anyone whose paid tool is mainly used for basic replay.

All of these integrate with: Google Analytics, Shopify, WordPress.
