Crazy Egg vs Matomo

Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

Entry price

From $29 per month (annual billing, 5k pageviews)

Trial only

From $29 per month (Cloud, 50k hits; annual billing gives 2 months free)

What drives the bill

The metric that actually scales your invoice.

Tracked pageviews are the meter, and the entry plan's 5,000 a month is small enough that a modest marketing site outgrows it. Recording and heatmap-report counts are separate caps on the same plan.

Self-hosting is free but plugins such as heatmaps and A/B testing are paid add-ons. Cloud scales with hits.

Free tier

Free trial on every plan; no permanently free tier.

Self-hosted Community edition is free forever with unlimited users and hits; premium plugins are paid.

Adoption

Established

Crazy Egg · since 2006

Widely used

InnoCraft · since 2007

Strengths

  • Heatmaps, recordings, surveys and A/B testing in one subscription rather than three.
  • The A/B editor is usable by a marketer without an engineer, which is the whole point of buying it.
  • Twenty years of the same product, which is unusual reassurance in this category.
  • Complete data ownership with no third-party processing — the strongest GDPR position available.
  • No sampling, unlike free tiers of hosted analytics.
  • Can be configured to run without cookies or consent banners.

Limitations

  • Pageview-metered, and pageviews are the thing you least control — a good week of traffic is an overage.
  • Session replay is shallower than FullStory or LogRocket: no console, no network, no error correlation.
  • Web only. There is no mobile SDK.
  • Self-hosting requires PHP and MySQL operations, including performance tuning at scale.
  • The interface is less refined than modern product analytics tools.
  • Advanced features are paid plugins even on the free self-hosted edition.

Best for

Marketing teams that want to see behaviour and act on it in one tool, without an engineer in the loop.

Public sector, healthcare and European organisations with strict data-residency requirements.

All of these integrate with: WordPress, Zapier.
