Crazy Egg vs Hotjar

Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

What drives the bill

The metric that actually scales your invoice.

Tracked pageviews are the meter, and the entry plan's 5,000 a month is small enough that a modest marketing site outgrows it. Recording and heatmap-report counts are separate caps on the same plan.

Hotjar's own plans are no longer sold. New buyers are quoted on Contentsquare's three product lines, which are billed separately, so budget for the line you need rather than one Hotjar-style bill. Existing customers are being migrated through 2026.

Free tier

Free trial on every plan; no permanently free tier.

Not available to new users. Contentsquare's free tier is the successor and is more generous than Hotjar's old 35-sessions-a-day limit.

Adoption

Established

Crazy Egg · since 2006

Category standard

Contentsquare · since 2014

Strengths

  • Heatmaps, recordings, surveys and A/B testing in one subscription rather than three.
  • The A/B editor is usable by a marketer without an engineer, which is the whole point of buying it.
  • Twenty years of the same product, which is unusual reassurance in this category.
  • Non-technical teams adopt it without training, which is why it spread inside organisations.
  • Surveys and recordings together let you ask a user about the behaviour you just watched.
  • Simple installation and good default privacy masking.

Limitations

  • Pageview-metered, and pageviews are the thing you least control — a good week of traffic is an overage.
  • Session replay is shallower than FullStory or LogRocket: no console, no network, no error correlation.
  • Web only. There is no mobile SDK.
  • You cannot buy it: new accounts are closed and you are really evaluating Contentsquare.
  • Existing customers face a migration onto separately billed product lines, which can change the total.
  • Weak for engineering debugging compared to LogRocket or FullStory.

Best for

Marketing teams that want to see behaviour and act on it in one tool, without an engineer in the loop.

Nobody new — start with Contentsquare or Microsoft Clarity instead. Existing Hotjar customers should plan the Contentsquare migration.

All of these integrate with: Google Analytics, Shopify, HubSpot.
