Crazy Egg vs Amplitude

Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

What drives the bill

The metric that actually scales your invoice.

Tracked pageviews are the meter, and the entry plan's 5,000 a month is small enough that a modest marketing site outgrows it. Recording and heatmap-report counts are separate caps on the same plan.

Paid plans are quote-based on monthly tracked users and events; enterprise contracts are substantial.

Free tier

Free trial on every plan; no permanently free tier.

Free plan with a monthly event allowance suitable for early-stage products.

Adoption

Established

Crazy Egg · since 2006

Category standard

Amplitude · since 2012

Strengths

  • Heatmaps, recordings, surveys and A/B testing in one subscription rather than three.
  • The A/B editor is usable by a marketer without an engineer, which is the whole point of buying it.
  • Twenty years of the same product, which is unusual reassurance in this category.
  • The deepest retention and cohort analysis in mainstream product analytics.
  • Good free tier for early-stage products.
  • Strong data-governance tooling for event taxonomy.

Limitations

  • Pageview-metered, and pageviews are the thing you least control — a good week of traffic is an overage.
  • Session replay is shallower than FullStory or LogRocket: no console, no network, no error correlation.
  • Web only. There is no mobile SDK.
  • Requires deliberate event instrumentation — nothing works without it.
  • Enterprise pricing rises steeply with tracked users.
  • Replay and experimentation are newer and less mature than the analytics core.

Best for

Marketing teams that want to see behaviour and act on it in one tool, without an engineer in the loop.

Product teams that need rigorous behavioural analysis over time.
