Storybook

Build components in isolation, then test the stories you already wrote.

What it is

Storybook renders UI components in isolation as 'stories'. Beyond documentation, the test runner executes interaction tests inside each story, and the same stories feed visual regression tools like Chromatic and accessibility checks via the a11y addon. Writing a story therefore produces documentation, a visual baseline and a test fixture at once.

Best for

Teams maintaining a design system or a large shared component library.

Component documentation

Render examples, usage guidance, variants and generated prop tables beside the component catalogue.

Where it is strong

  • One artefact serves as documentation, visual baseline and interaction test.
  • Design-system teams get a shared reference that designers can actually open.
  • Rich addon ecosystem for accessibility, viewport and state manipulation.

Where it falls short

  • Meaningful configuration and maintenance overhead; a neglected Storybook rots fast.
  • Build times on large component libraries get long.
  • Stories drift from production usage unless discipline is enforced.

Free tier: Everything, self-hosted

What drives the bill: Storybook itself is free. Chromatic, the hosted visual-review service from the same team, is a separate paid product.
