Pest
A friendlier front end for PHPUnit with a function-based, expressive API.
What it is
Pest wraps PHPUnit in a concise functional syntax inspired by Jest, adding higher-order tests, an expectation API, architecture testing and parallel execution. Because it runs on PHPUnit underneath, existing tests keep working and the whole ecosystem remains available.
Best for
Where it is strong
- Much less boilerplate than raw PHPUnit for the same coverage.
- Architecture testing — enforcing layering rules as tests — is a genuinely useful addition.
- Fully compatible with existing PHPUnit tests, so adoption is incremental.
Where it falls short
- Another abstraction layer to debug when something goes wrong underneath.
- Strongest in the Laravel world; thinner elsewhere.
- Smaller ecosystem of examples than PHPUnit.
