What it is

JMeter is a Java load-testing application with a desktop GUI for building test plans and a CLI for execution. Its distinguishing feature is protocol breadth — HTTP, JDBC, JMS, LDAP, SMTP, FTP, TCP and more — plus a large plugin ecosystem. It is free, ubiquitous in enterprise QA, and the tool most performance testers learned first.

Best for

Enterprise performance teams needing protocol breadth and a GUI-based workflow.

Aggregate graph

Compare response-time percentiles, throughput and errors across requests in a configurable chart.

Where it is strong

  • Protocol coverage no modern tool matches — JDBC, JMS, LDAP, mainframe-adjacent protocols.
  • GUI test-plan building is accessible to testers who do not code.
  • Enormous body of documentation, plugins and available expertise.

Where it falls short

  • Thread-per-user model is memory-hungry; high load needs a cluster where k6 needs one box.
  • JMX test plans are XML that merges terribly in version control.
  • The GUI must not be used for actual load generation, which trips up nearly every beginner.

Pricing

Free tier: Everything, self-hosted

What drives the bill: Free. Costs are load-generator infrastructure and, commonly, a cloud execution service such as BlazeMeter.
