Jest
The JavaScript testing incumbent: batteries included, snapshots, huge ecosystem.
What it is
Jest bundles a runner, assertions, mocking, snapshot testing and coverage into one package with sensible defaults. It is the default in React Native and Create React App lineage projects and has by far the largest plugin and matcher ecosystem in JavaScript testing. Meta handed stewardship to the OpenJS Foundation in 2022.
Best for
Where it is strong
- Everything in one dependency, with defaults that work for most projects on day one.
- The largest ecosystem of matchers, reporters and framework presets in JavaScript.
- Snapshot testing is genuinely useful for serialisable output when used with restraint.
Where it falls short
- Native ESM support remains awkward, and the Babel transform layer is a recurring configuration tax.
- Noticeably slower than Vitest on large suites.
- jsdom is not a browser; subtle DOM and CSS behaviour differs from reality.
