TestNG vs PHPUnit

Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

Strengths

  • Mature parallel-execution and grouping model, ideal for large Selenium suites.
  • Data providers make data-driven testing straightforward.
  • Test dependencies and ordering, which JUnit deliberately avoids.
  • Universal in PHP — every framework builds on it.
  • Mature mocking, data providers and coverage integration.
  • Well documented and extremely stable.

Limitations

  • XML suite configuration is dated and error-prone.
  • Test dependencies encourage ordering coupling that makes suites fragile.
  • Community momentum favours JUnit 5 for new projects.
  • Major versions drop older PHP releases aggressively, forcing upgrade work.
  • Verbose compared to newer wrappers such as Pest.
  • Coverage requires an extension, which slows runs significantly.

Best for

Java Selenium automation frameworks and large integration suites.

Every PHP project, directly or through a wrapper.
