pytest vs Vitest
Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

Strengths
- Fixtures are the best dependency-injection model in any test framework, and they compose cleanly.
- Assertion introspection produces genuinely useful failure output from a plain assert.
- Vast plugin ecosystem — pytest-xdist, pytest-cov, pytest-asyncio, pytest-django.
- Fastest watch-mode feedback of the JavaScript runners, by a wide margin on large repos.
- Zero-config ESM and TypeScript — the single biggest source of Jest configuration pain simply disappears.
- Jest-compatible API means migration is usually a day, not a quarter.
Limitations
- Fixture scope and ordering become genuinely hard to reason about in large suites.
- The magic that makes simple cases elegant makes complex cases opaque.
- Python only.
- Assumes Vite. On a Webpack or Metro project the advantage largely evaporates.
- Younger ecosystem; a handful of niche Jest plugins have no equivalent.
- Browser mode is still maturing relative to a dedicated component test runner.
Best for
Essentially every Python project.
Any Vite-based project, and most new JavaScript projects generally.
All of these integrate with: GitHub Actions, Playwright.
