Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

Adoption

Strengths

  • Universal in PHP — every framework builds on it.
  • Mature mocking, data providers and coverage integration.
  • Well documented and extremely stable.
  • No dependencies to install, audit or upgrade — a real supply-chain advantage for libraries.
  • Stable and versioned with the runtime itself.
  • Fast, with parallel execution by file and built-in coverage.

Limitations

  • Major versions drop older PHP releases aggressively, forcing upgrade work.
  • Verbose compared to newer wrappers such as Pest.
  • Coverage requires an extension, which slows runs significantly.
  • No DOM environment, so it is a poor fit for front-end component testing.
  • Ecosystem of reporters and matchers is tiny compared to Jest or Vitest.
  • TypeScript requires a loader or a build step.

Best for

Every PHP project, directly or through a wrapper.

Node libraries and backend services that want a dependency-free test setup.

All of these integrate with: GitHub Actions.
