Hoppscotch vs Insomnia

Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

Entry price

From $6 per user/month (Organization, billed annually; 25% more monthly)

Free tier

From $12 per user/month (Pro; ~17% off billed annually)

Free tier

What drives the bill

The metric that actually scales your invoice.

Self-hosting the community edition is free. The Organization plan adds an admin dashboard and vendor support; the self-hosted Enterprise edition is quote-based.

Free for small teams; Pro lifts the user cap and adds RBAC, and Enterprise at $45 per user/month adds SSO/SCIM and Kong Konnect integration.

Free tier

Free cloud tier and a fully functional self-hosted community edition.

Essentials is free for up to 3 users, including local and cloud projects, CLI and 1,000 mock requests a month.

Adoption

Established

Hoppscotch · since 2019

Widely used

Kong · since 2016

Strengths

  • Nothing to install — genuinely useful for onboarding and for locked-down machines.
  • Self-hosting is a single container, so internal deployment is trivial.
  • Very light and fast.
  • Noticeably faster and lighter than Postman for everyday request work.
  • Best-in-class GraphQL and gRPC ergonomics.
  • Design-first OpenAPI workflow with linting built in.

Limitations

  • Browser CORS restrictions require a proxy or the desktop agent for many real requests.
  • Fewer advanced testing and mocking features than Postman.
  • Smaller community.
  • A forced-account change in 2023 damaged trust; check the current model before standardising on it.
  • Test scripting is less capable than Postman's.
  • Smaller ecosystem of shared collections.

Best for

Teams that want a self-hosted, no-install internal API client.

Developers who mainly want a fast client with excellent GraphQL support.

All of these integrate with: OpenAPI.
