GrowthBook vs Unleash
Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.
Entry price
From $40 per seat/month (cloud Pro, up to 30 users and 3 projects)
Free tierFrom $75 per seat/month (Pay-As-You-Go, 5-seat minimum self-hosted)
Free tierWhat drives the bill
The metric that actually scales your invoice.
Seat-based rather than usage-based, so cost tracks the number of people using the platform rather than your traffic — which is why it stays dramatically cheaper than the commercial platforms at scale, especially self-hosted.
Self-hosted open source is genuinely free within its project and environment caps. Pay-As-You-Go includes 53M API requests a month with $5 per additional million; Enterprise is an annual custom contract adding SSO, audit and change requests.
Free tier
Self-hosted open source is free with unlimited users on 1 project; the cloud Starter tier is free for up to 3 users.
Open-source edition is free and self-hosted with no seat limit, but capped at 1 project, 2 environments and 5,000 flags.

Strengths
- Warehouse-native by design — no duplicate event pipeline and no data leaving your control.
- Self-hosting removes per-user-volume pricing entirely.
- Both Bayesian and frequentist engines with sequential testing support.
- Local evaluation means no user data leaves your infrastructure — a strong GDPR position.
- Mature, well-documented open-source core with no artificial crippling.
- Kubernetes and Terraform support for infrastructure-as-code workflows.
Limitations
- Requires a working data warehouse and someone who can define metrics in SQL.
- Self-hosting is operational work you own.
- Less polished governance and approval tooling than LaunchDarkly.
- Experimentation and analytics are thin; it is a flag system first.
- Self-hosting means you own uptime for something in your request path.
- Smaller ecosystem than LaunchDarkly.
Best for
Data-mature teams that already have a warehouse and want to avoid volume-based pricing.
Privacy-sensitive or cost-sensitive teams that want flags without sending user data to a vendor.
