Crazy Egg vs PostHog

Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

What drives the bill

The metric that actually scales your invoice.

Tracked pageviews are the meter, and the entry plan's 5,000 a month is small enough that a modest marketing site outgrows it. Recording and heatmap-report counts are separate caps on the same plan.

Usage-based pricing per product with a substantial free tier; most small teams stay free indefinitely.

Free tier

Free trial on every plan; no permanently free tier.

Large monthly free allowance across every product, plus free self-hosting.

Adoption

Established

Crazy Egg · since 2006

Widely used

PostHog · since 2020

Strengths

  • Heatmaps, recordings, surveys and A/B testing in one subscription rather than three.
  • The A/B editor is usable by a marketer without an engineer, which is the whole point of buying it.
  • Twenty years of the same product, which is unusual reassurance in this category.
  • Replaces four or five separate subscriptions with one bill and one SDK.
  • Free tier is large enough for real production use at startup scale.
  • Open source with a credible self-hosting path.

Limitations

  • Pageview-metered, and pageviews are the thing you least control — a good week of traffic is an overage.
  • Session replay is shallower than FullStory or LogRocket: no console, no network, no error correlation.
  • Web only. There is no mobile SDK.
  • Individual modules are less deep than category specialists.
  • Self-hosting at scale is a serious infrastructure undertaking.
  • The product surface changes fast, which means occasional churn.

Best for

Marketing teams that want to see behaviour and act on it in one tool, without an engineer in the loop.

Startups and scale-ups consolidating analytics, replay and flags into one platform.
