Crazy Egg vs OpenReplay
Feature checklists rarely decide anything. What decides it is the pricing metric, who has to write the tests, and which limitation you can live with.

The metric that actually scales your invoice.
Tracked pageviews are the meter, and the entry plan's 5,000 a month is small enough that a modest marketing site outgrows it. Recording and heatmap-report counts are separate caps on the same plan.
Self-hosting costs only infrastructure and is the main reason to pick OpenReplay. Managed cloud is an instance you rent rather than a per-session rate, though a usage-based serverless option also exists.
Free tier
Free trial on every plan; no permanently free tier.

Strengths
- Heatmaps, recordings, surveys and A/B testing in one subscription rather than three.
- The A/B editor is usable by a marketer without an engineer, which is the whole point of buying it.
- Twenty years of the same product, which is unusual reassurance in this category.
- Full data sovereignty — recordings stay inside your infrastructure.
- Developer-focused feature set comparable to LogRocket.
- No volume-based pricing when self-hosted.
Limitations
- Pageview-metered, and pageviews are the thing you least control — a good week of traffic is an overage.
- Session replay is shallower than FullStory or LogRocket: no console, no network, no error correlation.
- Web only. There is no mobile SDK.
- Self-hosting session replay is a non-trivial operational commitment, including storage.
- Smaller community and fewer integrations than the commercial tools.
- Analytics and funnel features are thinner.
Best for
Marketing teams that want to see behaviour and act on it in one tool, without an engineer in the loop.
Privacy-constrained or high-volume teams that cannot use a hosted replay vendor.
